Innovation in Action: How Pro Mujer is Scaling Women’s Healthcare Through Technology and Partnerships

By Marcela del Águila, Global Director of Health and Wellbeing Services, Pro Mujer

Investing in women’s health goes beyond the individual woman - it is an investment in resilient, thriving communities. Across Latin America, women spend 25% more time than men coping with health issues throughout their lives . Yet, structural barriers, gaps in care, and gender biases in health systems continue to limit their access to the services they need.

At Pro Mujer, a social enterprise with over 35 years advancing gender equality in Latin America, we respond to these challenges with a holistic, gender-focused model that combines digital innovation, on-the-ground support, and strategic partnerships to break down these barriers.

We believe that investing in women’s health is not only a moral imperative—it is also a profitable business opportunity. It is estimated that closing the gender health gap could boost the global economy by $1 trillion by 2040 (McKinsey Health). Additionally, for every $1 invested in women’s health, approximately $3 in economic growth is generated.

Delivering on this potential requires practical, scalable solutions—and that’s where Pro Mujer’s work begins.

A holistic approach to women’s health and wellbeing

Pro Mujer’s model is designed to meet women’s health needs at every stage of life. We combine prevention, education, and emotional support, always tailored to the realities women face across the region. That means offering affordable, accessible services that addressing the barriers women encounter, from distance and cost to stigma and lack of information.

For example, our Sana y Segura programme, in partnership with MSD for Mothers, tackles maternal mortality by combining education, digital tools, and direct health services. The programme empowers women to understand and exercise their sexual and reproductive rights through educational chatbots and a dedicated website. It also trains healthcare providers and brings free health services—including subdermal contraceptive implants, HIV testing, and cancer screenings—to communities where care is often out of reach.

In 2024, we launched Comunidades Saludables in partnership with MetLife Foundation, a project that focuses on improving women’s access to both health services and personal development opportunities in southeast Mexico. The programme combines preventive health care — such as free breast cancer screenings and diabetes testing — with digital skills training and leadership development through the Emprende Pro Mujer platform.

At Pro Mujer, we also believe that women can become trusted health advocates in their communities. Our Community Health Workers initiative equips local women with the knowledge and tools they need to provide essential health information, guide their neighbors to services, and help bridge gaps between formal health systems and underserved populations.

Scaling impact with technology and strategic partnerships

Throughout our experience, technology has helped us extend our reach and create solutions that women can access on their own terms. Our educational chatbots offer confidential, free information on breast cancer, menstruation, menopause, sexual and reproductive health, and gender-based violence.
Our telehealth services expand how women can connect with care. They provide flexible options that complement in-person support and make it easier for women to get the answers and follow-up they need at the right time. This helps strengthen the continuity of care across all of our programmes.

In 2024, Pro Mujer delivered over 529,000 health services across Latin America, including more than 390,000 medical procedures and 116,000 counseling sessions. Our digital health tools are scaling rapidly, with over 25,000 digital services delivered and 16,000 completed chatbot journeys.

These results are made possible through strategic partnerships that help us design, deliver, and scale solutions with real impact. By working with leading organisations—from public health bodies to private sector allies—we are able to combine resources, expertise, and innovation to reach more women and close critical gaps in care.

A bold vision for women’s health and wellbeing

In 2025, Pro Mujer renewed its commitment to helping women across Latin America reach their full potential with the launch of its strategy “Building the Next 35 Years Together”. This ambitious vision lays out how we will scale our impact by combining technology, partnerships, and gender-responsive solutions to address women’s most pressing needs, with health and wellbeing at the core.

Our new health strategy builds on this foundation. It focuses on delivering integrated, inclusive care that meets women’s needs throughout their lives while helping to close the gender health gap and unlock broader economic and social progress.

We invite investors and partners to join us in this mission because investing in women’s health isn’t just the right thing to do; it’s the smart thing to do.
